With how hectic life is these days, most people don’t get enough sleep. If you fall into this category, you may notice that you feel tired quite frequently throughout the day. In most situations, excess fatigue is more of an annoyance than a hazard. When it comes to driving, however, feeling tired behind the wheel can put both your safety and the safety of other drivers on the road at risk. Some of the dangers associated with driving while tired include the following:
- Slow reaction times. When your body is fatigued, you may not be able to react as quickly as necessary if a problem occurs on the road. For instance, if the vehicle in front of you suddenly slams on their brakes, your body may not respond fast enough to stop or swerve out of the way before a collision occurs.
- Decreased concentration. When you are tired, your ability to concentrate on what is happening around you naturally declines. That means that you may not notice hazards on the road. As an example, you may not notice a pedestrian crossing the street at an intersection, which could cause you to hit them.
- Falling asleep behind the wheel. Falling asleep while driving is one of the biggest dangers associated with getting behind the wheel when you are tired. This is especially true if you are driving on long, straight stretches of the road where not a lot of action occurs. Sitting in a warm car with the soft sound of the road noise around you can lull your body into a relaxed state, making it more likely that you will nod off while driving.
Driving while tired is one of the most dangerous things that you can do. To avoid any problems, you should always make sure that you are well rested before you take your vehicle out on the road.
If you start to feel tired while you are driving, don’t try to push through it. A lot of drivers think that they can stay awake by rolling down their windows or turning on loud music. Even though this might temporarily wake them up, the drowsiness inevitably returns, making them a danger on the road.
A much better option is to pull off the road as soon as you notice that you are feeling drowsy. Taking a quick nap can help you feel refreshed and rejuvenated, decreasing the likelihood of accidents. It is better to arrive at your destination a little bit late than never to arrive at all.
